Student Project: Make a Water Filter NASA

This system uses a series of filters to remove the contaminants from the water. Read our article on iodine water purification tablets to find out more. The ultraviolet rays of the sun can be extremely destructive to microorganisms. We as humans avoid it as much as possible as it can cause skin cancer and other diseases.
The biggest disadvantages to using chlorine long term to purify your source of water is that there may be some long term health effects of consuming to much chlorine. However, this must be done with great care because too much can be harmful. Using unscented laundry detergent, or unscented bleach is the yields the best results. It takes about 8 drops of bleach per five gallons of water.
How to Purify Water
While tanning beds and black lights use ultra violet light, they are the long wavelength UV-A variety. Germicidal action only occurs when using the short wavelength UV-C.lights. This wavelength does the job on bugs in water, but can also fry your skin in seconds. Save the black lights for gazing at neon pictures of Elvis. On the space station, this wastewater is made up of everything from the fuel that powers the station to astronauts’ sweat.
3-Stage Filtration System - First stage, Activated Carbon filters chlorine and improve the odor and taste of the water. Second stage, Silver Ion eliminates various tiny matters. Third stage, Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration Membrane filters 99.99% of harmful materials, including Lead, Chromium, Mercury and so on.
Which are two chemicals used to purify water?
Knowing how to use solar distillation to create your own evaporation trap can be crucial in a life or death survival situation. The evaporation trap, uses a process that takes place naturally on earth, that naturally filters water of both pollutants and microbes. It can be made with a variety of materials that could easily be available in a survival situation. Water purification is a process of making water safe to drink by removing contaminants. Contaminants can include bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that can make people sick. It will not, however, remove certain pesticides and solvents small enough to pass through the membrane.
Water filters range in size, shape, and cost, yet most of them work by pushing the water through a charcoal or ceramic filter and then chemically treating it. It is extremely important to be educated on how to treat contaminated water prior to drinking it. Mix or layer the filter materials you’ve collected in the top of your filter cartridge. Write down what filtration materials you use and how much.
How Do You Purify Dirty Water?
Aluminium Sulfate, Shortly known as Alum, when added to raw water reacts with the bicarbonate alkalinities present in water and forms a gelatinous precipitate. This floc attracts other fine particles and suspended material in raw water, and settles down at the bottom of the container. The water over this sediment is almost clean other than some fine particles dissolved in it.
You can increase or decrease the amount by smelling the chlorinated water. The water collected thus may still contain some fine dissolved particles, which can be removed by filtration. If you carry a small water filter during camping, you can fill this water after disinfection to get more pure water.
A fluoride after-filter can be added to the primary filter, if you are worried about fluoride. Unless you are trying to purify municipal water where fluoride is a known additive, there probably isn’t anything to get excited about. UV lights have been proven to kill harmful bacteria in water, air, and even solid surfaces, marking them as very useful tools in the water purification process. Commercial filters, on the other hand, are highly successful in removing almost all tannins and soil from contaminated drinking water. Since boiling contaminated water will remove all oxygen from the liquid, the resulting purified water may end up tasting flat. This is a very minor negative that can easily be fixed by simply shaking the purified water up a bit.
Upon cooling, vapor is reversed into liquid water that is clean and safe for drinking. Other substances that have a higher boiling point are left as sediments in the container. Though some are skeptical of the final results, many would be content to drink this water over tap water. Basically, the design requires a container that allows water to drain out of the bottom and to be poured in at the top.
You could use IR waves from the Sun if you want to, to kill up to 99 percent organisms by leaving those bottles sealed in sun. Entire civilizations used to use alum on a regular basis to clarify their water without widespread neurological problems. I understand the worry/fear but we've been using it for thousands of years with seemingly no ill effect. If I'm not mistaken, alzheimers rates have increased but our alum consumption has gone down... Which doesn't lead me to believe that alum is the predominant cause/significant contributor of/to the problem. About half a liter of water is left out in the bucket with the sediments.
After the two have been mixed, let the chlorinated water sit for half an hour before drinking. 7 to 10% chlorine – Add 4 drops of bleach to each gallon of water. You just need to swish it in the water and all the bacteria will be killed.
Certain plants are effective at removing pathogens from water, and pine trees are among the best. To remove viruses and bacteria from your water, remove a small branch from a pine tree. Strip the bark from the stick and place the bare stick into a bucket. Slowly pour the water, letting it trickle onto the stick and into the bucket. My mother’s husband is a plastics engineer and he advises against any sort of consumptive uses with plastics left in the sun, particularly water. He even advises against drinking water from those cases of water everybody buys.
